'New energy vehicles' lead China car sales in October

China's auto market enjoyed a strong month in October. Among the big winners were so-called new energy vehicles, which includes electric and plug-in hybrid models. They captured a third of all sales.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers says there were 2.85 million new car sales across the month. That's up 13.8 percent from a year earlier.

Automakers have been ramping up their campaigns for new energy vehicles. Sales of those models jumped by 33.5 percent.

Two Japanese companies enjoyed strong demand for eco-friendly cars. Honda saw sales surge by 23 percent year-on-year, and Toyota logged a rise of 1.5 percent. In contrast, Nissan recorded a drop of 17.5 percent.
