Japanese lawmaker arrested for alleged bribery linked to wind power projects

Tokyo prosecutors have arrested a lawmaker on suspicion of accepting bribes from a former head of a Tokyo-based renewable energy company in connection with offshore wind power generation projects.

Lower House member Akimoto Masatoshi was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of receiving bribes totaling 60 million yen, or about 406,000 dollars, from the ex-president.

The energy company was trying to win bids for offshore wind power generation projects. The government has been promoting this type of renewable energy.

Investigators believe Akimoto was given the money in exchange for seeking favorable treatment for the company during Diet sessions.
