Kishida explains Japan's position on treated water release to Malaysia

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has provided an explanation to his Malaysian counterpart about the safety of the treated and diluted water being discharged from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Kishida spoke with Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday ahead of a summit meeting between Japan and ASEAN in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

Government sources said Kishida explained that the safety of the water being discharged is scientifically proven. He asked for Malaysia's understanding, saying Japan will continue to deliver related information in a highly transparent manner.

In response, Anwar reportedly showed his understanding of Japan's position.

Kishida also explained Japan's position to Timor-Leste's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao.
