Philippine, US navies conduct joint sail in South China Sea

Naval vessels from the Philippines and the United States conducted a "bilateral sail" in the South China Sea on Monday.

A US guided missile-destroyer and a Philippine guided-missile frigate sailed together in Philippine waters west of Palawan province.

The objective was to enhance interoperability between the two navies.

Washington and Manila issued separate statements about the aim of the joint exercise. They said it was to demonstrate their defense capabilities and their commitment to uphold peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Philippines added it will continue to engage in multi-and bilateral activities that enhance its ability to protect its national sovereignty and territory.
