Japan's men's basketball team has finished 19th in the FIBA World Cup after winning three matches and losing two. In the previous World Cup, Japan was in 31st place.
In the first round, Japan pulled off a come-from-behind victory over Finland. But the team failed to advance to the second round after losing to Germany and Australia.
In the Classification Games 17-32, Japan topped its group after beating Venezuela and Cabo Verde. The victory over the West African nation put Japan at the top of the six Asian nations that took part in this year's World Cup.
The victory secured Japan a spot in the 2024 Paris Olympics. This is the first time in 48 years that the Japanese men's basketball team has won a ticket to the Olympics as the result of a qualifier.
Among Asian nations, Lebanon finished 23rd, and the Philippines was 24th. China was ranked 29th, Iran was 31st and Jordan ended in 32nd place.
Twelve teams will take part in the Paris Olympics next year. Australia and South Sudan have also earned spots in the Games. Australia was the highest-ranked Oceanian country at the World Cup, while South Sudan topped the African nations.
Four more teams are expected to win tickets to the Olympics based on the results of the second round and the final tournament.
