War-wounded Ukrainian man heads home from Japan

A Ukrainian man wounded by Russian shelling is returning to his country after spending one year receiving treatment in Japan.

Anton Kornishuk departed from Narita Airport near Tokyo on Friday night.

The 38-year-old was seriously hurt in a Russian mortar attack near Kyiv in March last year. He was serving as a combat medic at the time.

Kornishuk was studying Japanese at a university in Lviv in western Ukraine. He came to Japan in May last year with the help of his teacher and others, and was admitted to Chiba University Hospital.

He told NHK that he is grateful to the hospital staff, but has mixed feelings about heading home.

Kornishuk said he will rejoin the fight against Russia and enter the military as soon as he is ready.

Physician Matsuura Yusuke says Kornishuk has recovered beyond expectations. The doctor added that he does not want his patient to engage in fighting.

Matsuura also said he would like to visit Ukraine once peace has been restored.
