Japan, US defense chiefs to meet in Tokyo next week

Japanese Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu says he will have talks with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in Tokyo next week.

Hamada said on Friday that the meeting will take place on June 1.

He said the two defense chiefs will discuss concrete measures to strengthen the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-US alliance.

He added that they will hold detailed talks on items that were on the agenda at the "two plus two" meeting of the countries' foreign and defense chiefs in Washington in January.

Austin's visit to Japan will be his first since March 2021.
