Ron DeSantis announces 2024 presidential run

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced he is entering the 2024 presidential election race. He hopes to win the nomination as the Republican candidate over the party's current favorite, former President Donald Trump.

DeSantis filed paperwork for the candidacy on Wednesday before releasing a video of his announcement on social media. He says he wants to "restore sanity" to society and "integrity" to America's institutions.

As governor, DeSantis pushed back against federal pandemic restrictions and immigration policies. He has banned schools from teaching many issues of race, sexual orientation, and gender identity. His fight against what he calls "woke ideology" had Republicans talking about his bid long before he made it official.

He has seen Trump strengthen his position over a slew of other candidates from his party, including former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. But DeSantis is expected to argue he should be the nominee, saying he is the only one who can beat President Joe Biden.
