Russian, Belarusian sailors can take part in qualifying for 2024 Paris Games

World Sailing Board has announced a statement allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to return to competition in April next year.

It said sailors from both countries will be allowed to participate in qualification events for the 2024 Paris Olympics on the condition that they compete as "individual neutrals."

World Sailing issued a statement on Tuesday. The qualification events will be held in April next year.

The world body's decision comes after the International Olympic Committee Executive Board gave its guidance to international sports federations in March for conditions on athletes from both countries. The board said it approves the return of those competitors as individual neutral athletes.

The IOC also said the athletes must not have been contracted with military or national security agencies and teams of athletes cannot be considered. It said next April is the "targeted opportunity for sailors with a passport from Russia and Belarus to return to international competition as neutrals."

World Sailing also said in a statement it "remains wholly committed to supporting Ukraine's sailing community through what continues to be an unimaginably difficult time."
