Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is cutting short her participation in the Group of Seven leaders' meeting in Hiroshima due to the devastation caused by heavy rain and flooding in the northern region of Emilia Romagna.
She announced at a news conference early Sunday that she has decided to go back.
Meloni said that she has been working in Hiroshima for the past two days but "frankly" she "can no longer stay so far away from Italy at such a complex time."
She added that she shared the decision with the other leaders and that she thanked them for their solidarity and the expression of it.
She revealed that her country will host the G7 summit meetings in June next year in the southern region of Puglia.
