G7 summit now underway in Hiroshima, western Japan

The Group of Seven summit is now underway in Hiroshima, western Japan. Prime Minister Kishida Fumio welcomed the leaders on Friday morning.

The leaders spent part of the day at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. They viewed exhibits on the horrors of nuclear weapons, including photos of the devastation and other materials that survived.

The G7 leaders laid wreaths at the cenotaph to pay their respects to the victims.

There is a full slate of talks scheduled for the afternoon. Topics include the global economy, the war in Ukraine, nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

Food and energy will be on the agenda when leaders meet with the heads of non-G7 countries and regional groups from Saturday.

Kishida is hoping to demonstrate the G7's unity in the face of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and China's rapidly expanding global influence.
