Japan auto group: EVs not the only way forward

Representatives from Japan's top auto industry body says EVs are not the only way to reduce carbon emissions from vehicles. They say auto makers should use every clean technology at their disposal to cut their carbon footprint.

Officials from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association shared their view at a news conference on Thursday, the day before the opening of the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima.

Chairman Toyoda Akio said each country and region faces a different set of circumstances. He said the world needs a variety of technologies to account for these differences.

G7 leaders are split on the question of setting targets for EV numbers.

The industry group will exhibit a range of Japanese EVs, hybrid cars and fuel cell vehicles in the host city during the summit.
