Police have detained a man suspected of leaving a can that exploded at a train station in northeastern Tokyo, slightly injuring a nearby woman.
A worker at Tobu Skytree Line's Nishiarai Station told police on Monday afternoon that he heard an explosion and found a damaged can. A police officer hurried to the scene and found an exploded coffee can with multiple holes.
Tokyo police say security camera footage has confirmed that a man left the can at the scene of the explosion a few minutes earlier. They plan to question the suspect, who they say appears to be a foreign national in his 40s.
The victim, in her 20s, reportedly told police the fluid that splashed on her was hot. Police are examining the composition of the liquid left inside the can.
The incident comes as security in Tokyo is being tightened ahead of the Group of Seven summit to be held in Hiroshima, western Japan, later this month.
Businesses have been warned of possible acts of terror at major train stations, airports and other facilities where people gather.
