Japanese health ministry: 1-year-old boy died after coronavirus vaccination

Japan's health ministry says a 1-year-old boy with serious kidney illness died after receiving a coronavirus vaccination. It is the first confirmed case in the country in which a small child has died after inoculation.

The ministry disclosed this at an experts' panel meeting on Friday. It said the case had been reported by a medical institution.

Ministry officials say the child died in February, two days after receiving a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine. They say the boy was undergoing dialysis treatment and in the terminal stage of kidney failure.

Japan started coronavirus vaccinations last year for children aged 6 months through 4 years.

Experts on the panel say they cannot establish a causal link between the boy's death and the inoculation, citing a lack of information and other reasons.
