Los Angeles Lakers acquire Hachimura from Washington Wizards

In professional US basketball, the Los Angeles Lakers have acquired Japanese player Hachimura Rui from the Washington Wizards.

Under the deal that was announced separately by the teams on Monday, the Wizards gain the Lakers' Kendrick Nunn and multiple second-round picks in the NBA draft.

Rob Pelinka, the Lakers' general manager, said, "We are excited to welcome Rui and his family to the Los Angeles Lakers."

In 2019, Hachimura became the first Japanese player to be chosen in the first round of the NBA draft. He joined the Washington Wizards. The latest deal marks the first trade for the 24-year-old.

The Lakers are an extremely popular team. Superstar LeBron James is the leader. The team has won a record 17 NBA championships. It is tied for the most in NBA history.

But the Lakers are struggling to reach the playoffs this season. They are now in 12th place in the Western Conference with 22 wins and 25 losses.
