The Japan Pro-Footballers Association has named Mitoma Kaoru as its player of the year for 2022.
Mitoma is a winger for Brighton & Hove Albion in Britain's Premier League. He played in four matches at the recent FIFA World Cup in Qatar, giving Japan multiple chances for goals with his dribbling skills.
His goal-line assist in the match against Spain helped Japan to advance to the knockout stage.
Mitoma said in a video message on Wednesday that he is very honored to receive the award, and is happy about being highly rated by other players.
Yoshida Maya, the chair of the association and Japan's captain at the Qatar World Cup, says being positively rated by other players is very important and he hopes the award will boost morale.
