Japan Coast Guard patrol ship runs aground off Niigata

The Japan Coast Guard says a patrol ship has run aground in the Sea of Japan off Niigata Prefecture.

The Niigata regional coast guard says none of the 43 crewmembers of the vessel Echigo is injured. But it says oil is floating around the boat and it's taking on water.

The crew first reported the incident at around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday. As of 9 a.m., the ship was still stranded and all members of the crew remained on board.

Water is shallow in the area, about 1.1 kilometers northwest from a lighthouse in Kashiwazaki City. The Echigo was reportedly on a patrol.

It was raining at the time, with relatively strong winds of nearly 40 kilometers per hour. The Coast Guard is investigating how the vessel became grounded.
