Former Afghan female lawmaker shot dead

A former Afghan lawmaker who was known for standing up for the rights of women and girls has been shot dead at her home in Kabul.

Mursal Nabizada was among the few female MPs to have stayed in the country after the Taliban Islamist group seized power in 2021.

Police say Nabizada and her bodyguard were killed by unknown gunmen on Sunday morning. Her brother was injured in the attack.

The Taliban are now investigating the killings. No one has been arrested yet.

Local media say Nabizada was elected as a member of the lower house in 2018.
