At least 12 killed in anti-government protest in southern Peru

Clashes in a southern Peruvian city between anti-government protesters and security forces killed at least 12 people on Monday.

Health authorities in Juliaca reported the deaths that same day, adding that two of the victims were teenagers.

Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo was removed from office and detained on suspicion of rebellion last month. The move triggered nationwide protests that led airports and roads to close and left tourists stranded.

Reuters news agency and other media sources report the protests calmed down late last month but have resumed since last week.
