4 people survive after car plunges off California cliff

Four people, including two children, have been rescued after their car plunged nearly 80 meters off a cliff in the US state of California.

The Tesla sedan carrying the four drove off a Northern California cliff along a seaside roadway on Monday.

Officials say a 4-year-old girl, a 9-year-old boy and two adults were injured, but survived the crash and are being treated at a hospital.

Images taken at the scene show a badly damaged white vehicle at the bottom of a rocky cliff near crashing waves, and firefighters conducting rescue operations by helicopter.

The winding coastal area is known for fatal crashes. A fire official said it was "an absolute miracle" that the four people survived.

Authorities are investigating what caused the vehicle to go off the road.
