Japan's daily COVID-19 cases rise week-on-week for 17 straight days

Daily coronavirus case counts in Japan have risen week-on-week for 17 days in a row.

The health ministry said on Monday that it confirmed 42,424 new cases and 57 deaths nationwide.

The ministry also said there are 259 seriously ill patients who are on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines, or who are in intensive care units.

Tokyo reported the largest number of daily cases among all 47 prefectures at 4,619. That's up 594 from a week ago.

The capital's daily case count has also marked 17 straight days of week-on-week increases.
