Musk says Trump's Twitter account to be reinstated

Twitter CEO Elon Musk says the social media's account of former US President Donald Trump will be reinstated, based on results of a poll on the platform.

Musk tweeted, "The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated." He went on with the Latin phrase "Vox Populi, Vox Dei," which means "the voice of the people is the voice of God."

The CEO ran a poll on the social media platform on whether to allow the former president back on the service. More than 15 million Twitter users have voted in the poll. Final results showed that 51.8 percent were in favor of the reinstatement.

Twitter had banned Trump after the US Capitol riot last year for allegedly inciting violence. Some people voiced concerns over making such a decision with a poll.

Musk had indicated that he would not reinstate suspended accounts until convening a council to monitor and delete inappropriate tweets. But it has yet to be known whether such a body has been established.

On Friday, the CEO revealed that he had reinstated some Twitter accounts that have been suspended for having posted discriminatory comments.

Musk has explained that his buyout of Twitter is aimed at protecting free speech. Attention is now focused on how the CEO will reform the giant social media service.
