Events to promote voter registration held across US ahead of midterm elections

Events to promote voter registration have been held across the United States ahead of November midterm elections.

Citizens aged 18 and above have the right to vote, but they need to be registered as voters with local election committees in advance.

Tuesday was designated as "National Voter Registration Day" to encourage people to sign on.

One of the event sites was George Washington University in the US capital. Organizers passed out cards showing the website address that people can use to register.

The organizers say one in four eligible Americans were not registered to vote in the 2020 presidential election.

On the university campus, an 18-year-old student said he is excited to be able to vote. He said there is a lot of important issues in the midterm elections such as abortion rights.

One of the event organizers said current topics such as reproduction rights, climate change and the Ukraine situation seem to be motivating young people to go to the polls.

Midterm elections will decide the balance of power in Congress, with the ruling Democratic Party seeking to retain control of both Houses.
