Macron accuses Russia of returning to imperialism

French President Emmanuel Macron has denounced Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. He said it represents a return to imperialism and the age of colonialism.

Macron addressed the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

He said Russia has intentionally violated the UN Charter, even though it is a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The president said Moscow has decided to pave the way for future wars of annexation to occur in Europe, Asia or Africa. He said this represents a return to imperialism and the age of colonialism.

Macron noted that energy and food shortages caused by the military invasion could divide the international community.

He called for unity among nations. He said countries that are neutral and remain silent today serve the cause of a new kind of imperialism and become responsible for history.

He noted that France's position on peace has always been clear. He pointed out that Paris started engaging in dialogue with Moscow before the invasion began.
