Blackouts hit more than 140,000 households in Kyushu

Severe Tropical Storm Nanmadol has triggered power shortages across Japan's southwestern region of Kyushu, affecting more than 140,000 households.

Kyushu Electric Power Company says that as of 8 p.m. on Monday, blackouts had occurred in all of the region's 7 prefectures.

Chugoku Electric Power Transmission and Distribution Company says that as of 5 p.m., some 8,450 households in the western region had no power.

Chubu Electric Power Grid in central Japan says that as of 8 p.m., some 2,300 households had lost power.

Utility company officials are calling on residents to refrain from approaching damaged power lines and utility poles that have fallen to the ground.
