Investigative sources say the arrested chairman of the Kadokawa publishing firm met a former executive of the Tokyo Games organizing committee and asked for the early conclusion of a sponsorship contract.
Tokyo prosecutors arrested Kadokawa Tsuguhiko on Wednesday on suspicion of bribing Takahashi Haruyuki.
The prosecutors believe Kadokawa gave a total of 69 million yen, or about 480,000 dollars, to Takahashi. The money was allegedly given to thank Takahashi for arranging to have the publisher chosen as a Games sponsor.
The publisher signed the contract with the Tokyo Games organizing committee in 2019, and published official programs and guidebooks.
Kadokawa strongly denied offering bribes to Takahashi when he spoke to reporters on September 5.
Takahashi is said to be denying any wrongdoing.
