Tropical Storm Nanmadol forms, may approach Japan around Saturday

Japanese weather officials say Tropical Storm Nanmadol has formed over the sea south of Japan. They say it is expected to approach the southern Japanese prefecture of Okinawa and southern Kyushu and Shikoku.

The Meteorological Agency says a tropical depression developed into the tropical storm at 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

The agency says Nanmadol has a central atmospheric pressure of 996 hectopascals, with maximum winds of about 65 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour.

It says the tropical storm is moving east-northeast slowly and is expected to head northwest as it develops.

Officials say it could approach Okinawa Prefecture, southern Kyushu and Shikoku on or after Saturday.

They are calling on people to stay updated on the latest weather information.
