New bullet train route set to open in western Kyushu

Japan's iconic bullet train is set to launch on a new route after getting final clearance from transportation authorities.

The Kamome shinkansen will run on a line linking Nagasaki and Saga prefectures in western Kyushu. The 66-kilometer route opens in two weeks' time.

Authorities have completed a final safety check and given the Kyushu Railway Company the certification required to commence services.

The president of the rail operator, Furumiya Yoji, says he's determined to make the route a success and he's confident it will draw more tourism to the region.
