North Korea appears to be preparing to celebrate the 74th anniversary of the country's foundation on Friday.
State-run Korean Central Television reported that individuals who had made great contributions in their respective fields were gathering in Pyongyang. It added that a large amount of clothing adorned with the country's flag had been produced.
On last year's foundation day, leader Kim Jong Un watched a parade of paramilitary and public security forces at a square in the capital.
South Korea's defense ministry said on Thursday that North Korea could hold mass events to celebrate the foundation anniversary. The ministry said it is closely monitoring the situation.
North Korea declared victory over the coronavirus last month, but ramifications of longstanding international sanctions and anti-infection border closures have plagued its economy.
Analysts say the country is likely to use founding celebrations to boost domestic unity.
