The United States has announced that Vice President Kamala Harris will attend the state funeral for former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo in Tokyo later this month.
The White House said in a statement on Wednesday that Harris will travel to Japan and South Korea from September 25 to 29.
She will attend Abe's funeral on September 27 on behalf of US President Joe Biden and his administration.
The White House said her visit will honor Abe's legacy and underscore the importance of his leadership in championing the bilateral alliance and advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific.
It will be Harris's first visit to Japan since she assumed the vice presidency in January last year.
She is scheduled to meet with senior government officials both in Tokyo and Seoul to affirm the strength of their alliances, their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific and their shared economic and security interests.
