Soccer's world governing body, FIFA, has decided to increase the maximum squad limit by three to 26 for the upcoming World Cup.
The decision came at a meeting of the Bureau of the FIFA Council on Thursday.
Unlike past games, the World Cup Qatar 2022 will be held from November through December.
A FIFA statement said that to better deal with the unique timing of the championship and possible disruptive effects caused by COVID-19, the number of players to be included on the final list has been increased to at least 23 and a maximum of 26.
It added that up to 15 substitutes and 11 team officials will be allowed to sit on the team bench during a game.
The statement also said the maximum number of players on the release list has been increased from 35 to 55.
