Japan, Cambodia confirm close defense cooperation

The defense ministers of Japan and Cambodia have agreed to keep working together closely amid aggression by Russia that has shaken the foundation of international order.

Kishi Nobuo met with his Cambodian counterpart Samdech Pichey Sana Tea Banh on Tuesday. The Japanese defense minister is visiting Cambodia to attend a Japan-ASEAN meeting slated for Wednesday.

Kishi reiterated his strong opposition to any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo by force. He apparently had in mind actions by China, which is stepping up its hegemony in the South China Sea and other areas.

Kishi also had separate meetings with his counterparts from Indonesia, Brunei and Vietnam and agreed to boost bilateral defense cooperation.
