India celebrates International Day of Yoga

In India, millions of people took part in events nationwide on Tuesday to mark the International Day of Yoga.

A government-sponsored mass event usually takes place in India every year on this day, but it was canceled for the past two years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a known yoga enthusiast, performed a number of exercises with other participants.

It was his proposal in 2014 that served as the basis for the United Nations to declare June 21st as International Day of Yoga.

The coronavirus pandemic has reinforced the idea for millions of people in India and around the world that yoga is an effective way to stay happy and healthy.

One woman attending the event said the pandemic provided ''more inspiration to do yoga".
