UK workers call for wage increase

Thousands of workers have gathered in London to demand better pay amid historic inflation fueled by the situation in Ukraine.

Trade unions organized Saturday's march.

The consumer price index in the United Kingdom rose by 9 percent in the 12 months to April 2022, which is the highest in about 40 years.

Fuel, including gasoline, and food prices have risen sharply, contributing to the upward trend.

Demonstrators say their pay has not risen despite the sharp increase in the cost of living.

They demanded a "decent pay rise." Some of them called for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to step down, saying he is not doing enough to tackle inflation.

One of the protesters said that workers deserve pay which keeps pace with inflation so that they can lead decent lives.
