US 'watching very closely' for possible N.Korea nuclear test

A senior US government official says the United States is keeping a close eye on North Korea, which is reportedly preparing to carry out its seventh nuclear test.

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters on Wednesday that North Korea's repeated ballistic missile launches "only further cemented the strength of our alliances" with Japan and South Korea.

He said, "We've been able to conduct joint exercises with both of them in response to some of these launches."

Sullivan added, "We're also watching very closely the continuing possibility of a nuclear test, to which we would also have a robust response."

Sullivan said there has been no contact from North Korea, but the US is open and willing to engage in diplomacy if the North is prepared to come to the table.
