Lilies of the valley in full bloom in Hokkaido

Lilies of the valley are in full bloom in Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido.

The flowers began to blossom in Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, outside Sapporo City, late last month. "Suzuran" is Japanese for "lily of the valley."

About 20,000 plants with little pink and white flowers cover an area of roughly 400 hectares, emitting a sweet scent.

Park managers say the peak viewing season came about a week earlier than usual, due to a warm spell in May.

A family visiting from Tokyo said they like the park because there are few places in the capital where it feels so good.

Visitors to the park will be able to enjoy blue salvia and catmint later this month.
