Russian defense minister: Russia controls 97% of Luhansk

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu says Russia has captured 97 percent of Ukraine's eastern region of Luhansk.

Shoigu made the remark in a meeting at his ministry on Tuesday.

He said Russian forces completely seized the residential quarters of the city of Severodonetsk -- Ukraine's last stronghold in the region.

Shoigu also reported that his troops are still fighting to take an industrial zone and densely populated areas nearby.

Shoigu noted that 6,489 Ukrainian military personnel have surrendered since the start of what Russian leaders call their "special military operation."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday stressed that Ukrainian troops will not give up Severodonetsk despite fierce fighting in its streets.
