US President Joe Biden welcomed NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to the White House on Thursday. They discussed the fighting in Ukraine and agreed on the need to strengthen NATO's deterrence.
Stoltenberg said the conflict has become a war of attrition. He said allies should be prepared for the "long haul."
Stoltenberg updated Biden on the applications of Sweden and Finland to join the alliance. He said NATO members will find a united way forward.
Turkish leaders have resisted the bids. They've criticized the Swedes and Finns for supporting a Kurdish militant group they've designated as a terrorist organization.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that he wants the Nordic countries to take a "sincere approach" to Turkish concerns.
