US intelligence: Putin treated for advanced cancer in April

A US magazine has quoted senior US intelligence officials as saying Russian President Vladimir Putin has undergone treatment for advanced cancer.

Newsweek ran the story in its online edition on Thursday.

The three officials told Newsweek they read a classified intelligence report that says Putin seems to have re-emerged after undergoing treatment in April for advanced cancer.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on French TV last Sunday that he did not think a sane person can suspect any signs of an illness or ailment in the president, citing Putin's public appearances.

Western media had often raised questions about Putin's health before Newsweek published its story.

The article also quotes the officials as saying the report confirms there was an assassination attempt on Putin's life in March.

Newsweek says the US officials are concerned that Putin is "increasingly paranoid about his hold on power, a status that makes for a rocky and unpredictable course in Ukraine."
