US to send Ukrainians advanced weapons

US President Joe Biden announced a weapons package for Ukraine on Wednesday that includes advanced rocket systems. The latest round of aid is worth 700 million dollars.

Biden said he wanted to provide the Ukrainians with "new capabilities and advanced weaponry." That includes the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.

HIMARS will allow them to strike targets up to 80 kilometers away, well beyond their current range. US officials said the Ukrainians have promised not to fire into Russian territory.

Russian leaders warned such help could provoke a broader war. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the military support is aimed at "drawing the West into combat."

Ukrainian forces on the eastern front have found themselves overpowered. The governor of the region of Luhansk said the Russians control 70 percent of the city of Severodonetsk.

The Ukrainians fear, without help, they would be unable to fend off further attacks.
