China reacts sharply to US-Taiwan trade talks

China has voiced strong opposition to a US-Taiwan agreement to begin talks within this month to launch an economic partnership between them.

At a news conference on Thursday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian referred to the agreement for the US-Taiwan Initiative on 21st Century Trade that was announced on the previous day.

Zhao said China is firmly against any country which has diplomatic ties with Beijing conducting exchanges with Taiwan that are official in nature, in any form.

He warned that the United States will be jeopardizing its relations with China if it persists in a Taiwan card.

The Chinese official said Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party should stop as soon as possible its bid to seek independence by relying on the United States.
