The US administration of President Joe Biden has announced a new military assistance package worth 700 million dollars for Ukraine.
Senior administration officials said on Tuesday that the package includes high mobility artillery rocket systems that can accurately strike long-range targets, along with Javelin anti-tank missiles and helicopters. The advanced rocket systems were not included in the previous rounds of US military aid for Ukraine.
The United States is apparently seeking to bolster its military assistance for the war-torn country amid the prolonged conflict with Russia.
The officials added that the range of ammunition to be provided is around 80 kilometers. They said the Ukrainians had given assurances they will not use the rocket systems to strike targets inside Russia.
In an essay published in the New York Times on Tuesday, President Biden said, "We are not encouraging or enabling Ukraine to strike beyond its borders."
He said, "We want to see a democratic, independent, sovereign and prosperous Ukraine with the means to deter and defend itself against further aggression."
