Nikkei drops over 800 points

Tokyo's benchmark stock index fell sharply on Friday, after reports of a new coronavirus variant in South Africa raised concerns about the global economy.

The Nikkei 225 fell nearly 900 points at one stage from Thursday's close, taking it below 29,000 for the first time in about a month.

Sell orders were placed in a range of sectors, including transport, hitting rail and airline companies. Analysts say surging cases in Europe and elsewhere are contributing to the downturn.
