Smoke kills 10, traps dozens in Russian coal mine

Authorities in Russia's West Siberia say at least 10 people have been killed after smoke filled a coal mine.

The incident occurred in the Kemerovo region at around 8:50 a.m. on Thursday.

The local government has announced that there were 285 workers in the mine when the smoke erupted. Ten of them have been confirmed dead, and 36 others remain trapped in the mine.

Russia's ministry of emergency situations says rescue operations have been hampered by columns of smoke rising from 250 meters below ground level.

Kemerovo is known as a coal producing region, and mine incidents have occurred there in the past.
