Canteen falls from Osprey during flight

Japanese Defense Ministry officials say a canteen fell from a US Osprey transport aircraft while the plane was flying over a residential area in the southwestern prefecture of Okinawa.

Ministry officials and others say the canteen landed on the premises of a home in Ginowan City on Tuesday evening. There have been no reports of injuries so far.

Police say the stainless steel canteen is about 20 centimeters high and 15 to 17 centimeters across. They say it was found crushed.

The Osprey belongs to the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Ginowan City.

Footage taken by an NHK helicopter before noon on Wednesday shows that the area around the home has been cordoned off.

The incident is being investigated by the Okinawa Defense Bureau and local authorities.
