Philippines condemns China maritime action

The Philippines has condemned the actions of Chinese vessels in the South China Sea, saying they threatened the special relationship between the two countries.

The Philippines' Department of Foreign Affairs says the incident on Tuesday involved three Chinese coast guard vessels blocking and using water cannon against two Philippine supply boats.

The boats were headed for an atoll occupied by the Philippines. Officials say the boats were carrying food for military personnel there but had to abort their mission. No one was hurt in the incident.

On Thursday, the Philippine foreign ministry in a statement condemned "in the strongest terms" the actions of the three Chinese vessels.

It also said, "China has no law enforcement rights in and around these areas. The acts of the Chinese Coast Guard are illegal. China's failure to exercise self-restraint threatens the special relationship between the two countries."

Tensions have been rising lately between the Philippines and China. In March, more than 200 Chinese fishing vessels gathered at a coral reef inside the Philippines's exclusive economic zone.
