Teleworking office set up on Lake Biwa

A floating teleworking office has been set up for one day on Japan's largest lake in the western prefecture of Shiga.

The temporary office on Lake Biwa was organized by the Shiga Prefecture Industrial Support Center, which helps small businesses in the region.

Last Friday's event was a part of a trial to find new teleworking environments amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The office was set up on a cargo barge measuring about 200 square meters, equipped with desks, chairs and free WiFi. It also had a cafe that served coffee.

About 10 self-employed people made advance applications to use the office. They checked documents and held business negotiations on board, as a fresh breeze was blowing.

A participant says she found the lake's natural environment refreshing, and it helped her to come up with new ideas.

A Shiga prefectural official, Funakoshi Hideyuki, says the prefecture is trying to create new teleworking venues in attractive locations.
