Outgoing Honduran president visits Taiwan

Outgoing Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez arrived in Taiwan on Friday ahead of talks with President Tsai Ing-wen.

The two leaders are scheduled to meet on Saturday.

Honduras is one of 15 countries that keep diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

Hernandez is not running in a presidential election on November 28. An opposition party candidate says she plans to establish diplomatic ties with China.

China has been pressuring countries into severing ties with Taiwan. Seven, including three in Central America and the Caribbean, have done so since 2016, when Tsai took office.
Taiwan's foreign ministry says it sent a senior official to Honduras in September. It says the official told key figures within the ruling and opposition parties that China's offer of economic support is just an empty promise.
