Moderna seeks Japan vaccine approval for 3rd shots

US pharmaceutical firm Moderna has applied for approval of its coronavirus vaccine for third doses in Japan.

Sources say Moderna filed the application with the health ministry on Wednesday through its Japanese distributor, Takeda Pharmaceutical.

They say Moderna presented data from overseas clinical trials on people aged 18 or older. The third doses were given at least six months after the second, with half the amount used in the first two shots.

Meanwhile, the health ministry gave its first approval for the Pfizer-BioNTech booster on Thursday. Officials are planning to start administering third doses to frontline medical workers as early as December.
