More empty offices in Tokyo amid pandemic

More offices in central Tokyo are sitting empty as people work remotely and businesses scale back their workplaces amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The vacancy rate has risen for 20 straight months.

Office-space broker Miki Shoji says 6.47 percent of workspaces of roughly 2,600 offices in five business districts were unoccupied in October.

The falling demand is weighing on rents. The average charge was down by 7.27 percent from a year earlier, marking the 15th consecutive month of decline.
